As foreshadowed relentlessly by the film—nearly Anthony-Edwards-in-Top-Gun-level foreshadowing—Gwen Stacy dies at the end, lost in the battle between Spidey and Green Goblin. To my mind, it’s the film’s most affecting moment: Spidey’s web chasing Gwen as she plummets down to the bottom of a clock tower and catching her a foot before she hits the pavement, but centrifugal force causes her head to spring down briefly and fatally anyway. She cannot be revived. She doesn’t even get a last line or flutter of life before she passes. Superhero movies are generally not inclined to remind us of our basic mortality, not when they so regularly make the impossible possible. But Gwen’s instant, very human death has an impact that the rest of this disposable film can’t match.
