The day has finally come: Soul Plane is getting the collector’s edition (on both DVD and Blu-ray, thankyouverymuch) that the early aughts masterpiece so richly deserves. Rejoice. Generally speaking, it’s a good week for special editions of all stripes, including a brand-new Mission: Impossible quadrilogy pack that will allow fans of Tom Cruise acting extremely reckless the opportunity to catch up on his adventures as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt before the fifth film in the franchise arrives later this summer. Elsewhere, Scream Factory is going the collector’s edition route with Dog Soldiers, only available on Blu-ray.
The real winner of the week, however, isn’t exactly a special or collector’s edition, it’s Criterion Collection’s The Fisher King, which all but demands your buying dollars this week. Sorry, Soul Plane, you might have to wait a little bit longer.
The week also offers up a wide variety of picks from Olive Films, including Fled, Johnny Be Good (hey, Anthony Michael Hall), and Thrashin’. The Warner Archive also has some new-to-DVD titles available via Amazon, including Five Came Back and Hugo The Hippo. If you’ve got any spare change kicking around after picking up The Fisher King, you’ve certainly got some intriguing options for the rest of the week. A solid dark horse? A new DVD edition of the Michelle Williams- and Anna Friel-starring Me Without You.
