Our slim weeks are over. After a handful of entries that relied on the charms of sponge-bodied men and a double dose of Jeff Bridges being crotchety in features that were staggeringly below him, the home-video bubble has re-inflated, chock full of all sorts of delightful offerings. This week shows a marked uptick in home-video offerings, and while they run the gamut from the popular (the unexpectedly amusing Kingsman: The Secret Service) to the totally misbegotten (Serena) to the whatever-the-heck Back To Jurassic (in 3D, no less) is, that means one thing: There’s something for everyone (kind of our favorite way to be when it comes to Blu-ray and/or DVD-buying).
Warner Archive is unfurling a mass of excellent DVD offerings this week, including Criminal Court, Johnny Angel, and Two O’Clock Orange. Catching up on the classics? Grab a new DVD version of Judgment At Nuremberg, then throw in some Inherit The Wind for good measure. Your shelves already look better. Interested in catching up on some recent picks? The Mae Whitman-starring The DUFF is available on both Blu-ray and DVD (and combo pack if you’re feeling wild), a hilarious and genuinely smart spin on the once-tired high school comedy trope. Need to beef up your doc watching? Both Red Army and Until The Light Takes Us offer insights into otherwise insular communities—hockey and Norwegian black metal, naturally—and while Gett: The Trial Of Viviane Amsalem is a narrative drama, it depicts the kind of true-life situation the continues to play out around the world. It is salad days again, people.
