Ben Mendelsohn might star in Star Wars spinoff Rogue One

by Kate Erbland
Ben Mendelsohn might star in Star Wars spinoff Rogue One

The Dark Knight Rises. Exodus: Gods And Kings. Killing Them Softly. The Place Beyond The Pines. Australia. The New World. Shall I keep going? Australian character actor—that character is usually “extremely terrifying” or “endearingly loser-ish”—Ben Mendelsohn has appeared in a slew of major motion pictures from an impressive lineup of directors, but he’s yet to truly break through. Put it this way: Your parents probably know the guy, but in a, “Oh, I know that guy” way. Mendelsohn’s stock has recently been on the rise, thanks to a part in Netflix’s Bloodline (a show that, you guessed it, my mother is watching and liking a lot) and a rare starring role in Ryan Boden and Anna Fleck’s Mississippi Grind, which premiered in January at Sundance.

It’s been a steady ascent, but Mendelsohn’s career might be getting positively galactic.

Deadline reports that Mendelsohn is now rumored to star in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. The outlet is slim on the details—and Disney has not commented—but they report that “Mendelsohn is circling a lead role alongside Felicity Jones in Rogue One, the Star Wars spinoff to be directed by Gareth Edwards.” (We told you those details were slim.)

Godzilla director Edwards was locked for the project back in May, while Jones’ casting earlier this year came on the heels of chatter that the film was specifically looking for a badass female lead. Both Edwards and Jones were confirmed for the project by a recent Disney conference call (along with screenwriter Chris Weitz, and its actual title), which also announced that the film will zip into a theater near you on December 16, 2016.

Although there had been a number of rumors that Edwards’ film would focus on the rebels who stole the Death Star plans, its title hints at something else…even though we’re still not quite sure what that is. (Star Wars expert Mike Ryan, over at Uproxx, has some possible ideas for you to chew over, however.) With a release date less than two years away, Rogue One will need to start beefing up on its cast soon enough. If Mendelsohn is next in line, we just got somehow even more excited for this feature.
