This week’s new home-video offerings are a little slim when it comes to truly “new” entries—though if you’re a fan of the varying levels of insanity that both R100 and the Night At The Museum franchise has to offer, you’re most likely going to be emptying out your pockets in a big way within the next few hours—but they’re ripe with nostalgic pickings for both the surly teen and the peppy au pair that routinely battle it out inside of your heart. (“Bender. Maria. Always you wrestle inside me.”)
Both The Breakfast Club and The Sound Of Music are hitting shelves with shiny new anniversary versions (the John Hughes classic is now 30, while everyone’s favorite musical about Nazis is turning 50), required buys for fans of either film. If you’ve been looking to upgrade your collection (cat ate your TBC copy? feel that), these are essential buys that likely won’t get much better for another 10 years or so (and who knows what we’ll be watching our movies on then, everything will probably be formatted for fancy watches or odd headgear). If you don’t own either already, this is a fine time to fix that, because both truly are deeply rewatchable films that hit different tones of ringing nostalgia. We wouldn’t recommend them as a double feature—but, then again, they do both sport excellent soundtracks...
