When the icons of American slasher properties convene for their monthly support-group meeting in the basement of their neighborhood YMCA, numbers invariably take over the discussion. Friday The 13th’s Jason Voorhees prides himself on 12 films, the reigning champ. Freddy Krueger of Nightmare On Elm Street notoriety and Hellraiser’s Pinhead have appeared in nine films apiece, a respectable showing. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface and Saw’s Jigsaw sit off to the side, murmuring amongst themselves. Halloween’s Michael Myers walks over and claps Jigsaw on the back, chuckling, “Seven? That’s it? You’ll get there someday, little guy.” He’s smiling beneath his eerily lifeless mask, because he knows he’s about to get kicked up into the Elevensies Club. Jason makes eye contact with Michael and winks. “Welcome to the big leagues, kiddo.”
But yeah, there’s going to be an 11th Halloween movie. Variety reports that Dimension Films plans to commence production at the beginning of July under the title Halloween Returns. This may cause some confusion, as the series’ fourth film ran as Halloween IV: The Return Of Michael Myers and the eighth film remains Halloween: Resurrection, making this newest feature the third to center on some sort of revival. But then, in a franchise with two titles labeled Halloween and two more Halloween II, a film that appears to salute water in its title, and no rhyme or reason between regular numbers, roman numerals, or the complete excision of numeric titling altogether, consistency’s not exactly a concern.
Marcus Dunstan, director of 2009’s The Collector and its sequel The Collection—not to mention scriptwriter on Saws 4-7 and Piranha 3DD—will take the helm of the new installment. Dunstan’s script will move the franchise in a different direction from the Rob Zombie-directed Halloween and Halloween II, drawing Michael into a new mythology, though the specifics have been kept under lock and key. We last checked in with Michael in 2009, when the latest incarnation of his constant foe Laurie had stabbed him and been checked into an intensive mental-care facility. Dunstan’s project will wipe the slate clean, bringing Michael a new environment. I don’t want to speculate or anything, but chances are high that regardless of whichever new milieu Dunstan places him in, Michael’s response will be of the stabby variety.
