You know what that second Star Wars spinoff film really needs? A director. (Literally: Josh Trank left weeks ago, and there’s been nary a peep as to who will take over the film.) You know what Michelle MacLaren really needs? A film. (Again, literally: The one-time Wonder Woman director left that project also weeks ago, and has yet to publicly line up a new gig.) Is this synchronicity? Serendipity? Just a weird coincidence?
Over at Meet The Movie Press (via ScreenCrush), it seems like things might be going more in the “really great confluence of events” direction, as The Wrap reporter Jeff Sneider shared a very intriguing rumor on his show last week: that MacLaren has met with Lucasfilm regarding its second Star Wars spinoff. That’s all Sneider has for now—and he’s made it clear in the past that he takes his good rumors to MTMP, while his more deeply sourced stories are published on The Wrap—but it at least shows an interest on both parties’ sides, plus an idea of what Lucasfilm is looking for with the project, which has already been mussed about by Trank’s departure.
MacLaren has long been one of the names earmarked for a big jump from beloved television (Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad) to blockbuster film, and while Wonder Woman sure looked like her ticket, it seems like that turn just wasn’t meant to be. Is she ready to go to a galaxy far, far away?
The last we heard about this second film, it was to be centered on young Han Solo and/or Boba Fett, and could potentially be helmed by Jon Favreau or Matthew Vaughn. Now, this MacLaren stuff is just a puff of a rumor, but it does seem more in line with the original direction of the film (using a still unproven director to craft the film), and it’s one that is really a whole hell of a lot more exciting.
