A Most Violent Year and Margin Call director J.C. Chandor is going back to New York City for a new film that sounds as if will fit right inside his Gotham-centric wheelhouse. The Hollywood Reporter shares that Chandor has re-teamed with distributors A24 to produce the new film, a big-screen version of Vicky Ward’s book The Liar’s Ball.
As of now, Chandor is only on board to produce the fact-based book, which looks at the history of NYC’s own G.M. Building. (The book even bears the subtitle “The Extraordinary Saga Of How One Building Broke The World’s Toughest Tycooons,” so you just know stuff is going to get dramatic.) But it is believed that he will likely also direct the film.
Per THR, “Ward’s book tells the tale of industry titans who fought it out over one of the crown jewels of New York City real estate. Much of the story in the book focuses on Harry Macklowe and his battles to own and re-develop the G.M. Building in the 1990’s and into the 2000’s. That battle resulted in the now famous Apple Store ‘glass cube’ but also ultimately in Macklowe losing the building.” The book hit shelves back in October of last year, and it provides a fascinating—and, frankly, surprisingly accessible—look inside the wheeling and dealing of Manhattan real estate. Ward’s work also includes tons of interviews with real-estate and business bigwigs, like Donald Trump, William Zeckendorf, Mort Zuckerman, and David Simon, so there is a ton of juicy stuff to adapt here.
Of the news, Chandor told THR, “Commercial real estate in New York City has long fascinated me, to the point where I once had a broker’s license… The story that Vicky has captured through relentless research and interviews explores the drama and the romantic nature of buildings in a city that has continued to push closer and closer to the sky with each passing year.” Real estate: It’s sexy!
The film’s screenplay will be written by Gideon Yago, who has apparently carved out quite a writing career for himself since I stopped watching MTV.
