It’s been almost a decade since cinema was treated with a new Daniel Clowes adaptation (what up, Art School Confidential), but it sure sounds like the newest take on the beloved cartoonist’s written work is going to be more than worth the wait.
The Hollywood Reporter shares that Clowes’ Wilson, a 2010 graphic novel that was optioned for the big screen before it was even published, is finally set to go the movie route. Although Alexander Payne was initially attached to direct the feature from a Clowes script, the film will now be helmed by Craig Johnson, who has already proven his ability to strike fine balances between comedy and drama with his Sundance hit The Skeleton Twins. (Clowes is still in charge of scripting duties.)
The attachment of Johnson to the feature is heartening enough (I really love The Skeleton Twins), but the film has also snagged two big stars who sound even more perfect for the picture: Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern. And, just like that, Wilson has immediately shot to the top of our most-anticipated lists.
Harrelson will star as the eponymous Wilson, a classic Clowes loner and misanthrope who attempts to reconnect with his damaged ex-wife (Dern) after the death of his father, only to discover that the pair also have a teenaged daughter who was given up for adoption after her birth. Despite his bad attitude and penchant for pontificating on the ills of the world, Wilson really is looking for a human connection, and he uses this knowledge to attempt to forge a new family. You can probably guess how that all works out.
The film is set to shoot in June in Minneapolis.
