Ugh, my heart. It’s too early for this much emotion. We’ve already gotten a little looksee at Mark Osborne’s The Little Prince, the animation director’s upcoming Cannes entry, but now we’ve got a longer, fuller, and more tear-stained trailer to enjoy.
Based on the beloved novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Osborne’s The Little Prince retrofits the classic story to explore it from a modern angle with the added benefit of reflection to add new layers to an already lovely story. In this version of the tale, the Aviator (voiced by Jeff Bridges) is a lonely old man (sorry, already crying) who becomes best pals with the academically inclined little lass next door (voiced by Mackenzie Foy). Although most of the little girl’s life has been dominated by schoolwork, planning, and scheduling (thanks to her clearly well-meaning mother, voiced by Rachel McAdams), the Aviator soon opens her eyes to the magic of the world—a lesson he learned from his early adventures with the Little Prince.
The film switches up its animation styles as it tells its stories, zipping between computer animation and a paper-cut style, and both are equally gorgeous and moving in their own way. Take a look:
