Rebel Wilson says she is on board to star in a third Pitch Perfect movie

Rebel Wilson says she is on board to star in a third Pitch Perfect movie

Sequels! Hollywood loves them! But although the box office is glutted with continuing franchises—cough, cough, Furious 7—that wildly expand out their mythologies and plots in a constant cycle of one-upmanship, there’s something to be said for the appeal of a decidedly more low-key sequel. Like, oh, I don’t know… Pitch Perfect 2? The upcoming sequel to the 2012 smash hit isn’t doing anything wild, like going to space or retconning its mythos (well, not that we know of), it’s simply moving forward in a very traditional manner, taking the trilling Bellas from a national a cappella competition to an international one. This is like something out of the ’80s! Where is Vin Diesel? How come no one is piloting a car out of a plane? Madness.

But there is also something limiting about competition-based films, because there’s only so far our beloved characters can go before they reach the mountaintop. How many a cappella competitions can there possibly be? Do you think there will be one in space?

Well, that very question might be answered soon, because Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson claims that there is a third film on the aca-horizon, and the actress even told Los Angeles Times reporter Amy Kaufman as much:

News: Rebel Wilson just told me there will be a 3rd @PitchPerfect and she recently signed on to be in it! (She doesn't know abt Kendrick.)

Ohh. As Collider notes, “When casting begun for Pitch Perfect 2 and Hailee Steinfeld joined the ensemble, it was reported that the plan was for her to take over the franchise in the future, so it’s likely she’ll be back as well (she no doubt signed a contract with multi-picture options),” so this news isn’t entirely shocking, but it certainly does have us wondering where exactly a third film could go. Who knew being a movie fan would involve deep thinking about the mechanics of a cappella competitions? We would rather just sing about it.

Pitch Perfect 2 opens May 15.
