In an installment of her daily Newsies round-up column from April, our dedicated News Editor Rachel Handler noted the announcement of a female-centric 21 Jump Street spin-off film. Employing all of her journalistic skills, Rachel provided astute and insightful analysis on the developing situation, so let’s just take a look at that right now:
We’ve been well! Very well, considering news that arrived today, courtesy of THR. Broad City writers Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello have some exciting new company in the writers’ bungalow on the Sony lot. Bob’s Burgers writers Lizzy and Wendy Molyneux are the latest funny people to join the production, which still has no title, director, or cast as of publication. The announcement of 21 Jump Street 4 Ladies! comes hot on the heels of Sony’s decision to accompany its Ghostbusters reboot with a distaff Ghostbustin’ Gals project. Our fearless Genevieve Koski has enumerated the troubles with mandated-female-version thinking, but with such an evidently talented writing staff, there’s no harm in getting excited over this gestating project.
Wendy Molyneux in particular has drawn a lot of attention recently, for a crowdsourcing campaign on GoFundMe that raised over $30,000 for CureSearch, all so that the writer would attend the Entourage movie. She was no fan of the franchise and by her own admission, loath to see the film, (which we get), but she did just that and will do so three more times in accordance with her exceeded goal. After which, presumably, we will be granted the privilege of an account of her descent into madness. She’s humorous, but more than that, she’s brave beyond words.
