Exciting announcements continue to roll out of Cannes. Last week saw the big unveiling of the festival’s official slate of films that will battle for the Palme d’Or in the Competition section, and just yesterday, Kate Erbland broke down the picks for the Critics Week sidebar that runs parallel to the festival’s main offerings. But Cannes Film Festival has more sidebars than a contentious court case, and today, one more of them has revealed itself to the public, along with the final jury selections for this year's fest.
The Directors’ Fortnight sidebar—a misnomer, considering that a fortnight lasts 14 days whereas the entirety of the Cannes Film Festival takes up only 11, so honestly how dare they—now has a full lineup of entries from some exciting names in world cinema. Last year’s program included films that would spend the following year amassing rave reviews, such as The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya, Girlhood, and Sundance import Whiplash. This year’s crop promises loads of fine films that’ll slowly amble to U.S. theaters over the year to come, too.
A few familiar names stick out straightaway. Returning to Cannes after bringing home the coveted FIPRESCI Prize for his Blue Ruin in 2013, Jeremy Saulnier will debut his newest effort, Green Room. It’s about a punk band that gets stuck in a remote venue after witnessing a murder. It has Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat, Anton Yelchin, and Imogen Poots. Patrick Stewart will play a white supremacist. I was on board three sentences ago.
Other noteworthy entries include Rick Famuyiwa’s Dope, which will close out the sidebar after winning plaudits at Sundance in January; Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War Of The Underworld, the incredibly titled new film from Takashi Miike of Audition notoriety; and French great Arnaud Desplechin’s latest, My Golden Years. Take a gander at the full list of feature programming from the Directors’ Fortnight (and all nine jury members) below:
