The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will write The Lego Movie 2

by Kate Erbland
The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will write The Lego Movie 2

Everything is awesome! While we’ve long known that Warner Bros. is feverishly locking together a Lego Movie-centric movie universe, it’s so far been unclear how the ever-growing series would include the talents of creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Worry no more, brick fans!

Deadline reports that the very funny comedy team will return to script the second Lego Movie—currently slated to arrive on May 26, 2017—ensuring continued levels of awesomeness for the franchise. Lord and Miller’s films have already spawned a number of sequels, including this summer’s 22 Jump Street and a follow-up to their Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, but the duo have not always returned for either scripting or directing duties. Although the pair did return for 22 Jump Street (and will likely get back behind the camera for the recently announced 23 Jump Street), they didn’t write or direct Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, and their creative spark was noticeably absent.

There’s no word on who will direct this particular sequel, but Warner Bros. will likely return to the same creative well that unleashed The Lego Movie on hordes of adoring fans. The film already has another spinoff lined up—The Lego Batman Movie, which will allow the morose Will Arnett-voiced superhero to plunge still deeper into his world of “darkness, no parents, continued darkness”—which is set to be directed by Chris McKay, who served as the animation co-director on the original film. It’s also unclear what the plot of this second Lego Movie will be centered on, but with Lord and Miller back on board, it seems likely that all of the pieces will click together quite nicely.
