Let’s get one thing straight, you square kids, Ricki Randazzo is not some regular mom, she’s a cool mom, and that means rocking out and getting lippy with Rick Springfield and being tight with that one kid from Pitch Perfect and not actually mom-ing or whatever. In Jonathan Demme’s upcoming Ricki And The Flash, Meryl Streep is Ricki, who has shunned traditional parenting roles in order to work on her music, man. The lead singer of the so-called Flash is undoubtedly talented, but her work in cover music hasn’t lead to big-time fame, and it’s also pulled her away from her pack of grown-up kids, none of whom seem especially enamored of their hip mom.
When one of those kids—“Julie, our daughter,” thanks, Kevin Kline—goes through a major life upheaval, the troops are rallied, including Ricki, who arrives back home complete with her own travel snacks (wine) and questionable hair decisions. Will her presence help or harm the fragile, also questionably follicled Julie (Streep’s real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer)? Unclear, but we do know that Ricki definitely lays down the hammer on Julie’s dumb, gross ex-husband (and probably also cries a lot when she realizes what she has abandoned in search of her musical career).
Can Ricki have it all? Well, she can certainly try.

Although the first trailer for Ricki And The Flash appeared to lay out the entire plot structure of the film (including what definitely looked like a series of very important third-act scenes), that does not change the fact that this film just looks fun, and Streep look like she is having the time of her life. You can be our cool mom, Ricki.
