Ticking timebomb action hero Liam Neeson has so far utilized a stunning breadth and depth of transportation options on the way to kicking ass and/or taking names, from planes to trains to various Lego vehicles to even more planes (the guy likes planes!), but it’s been a while since he dove deep with the aid of a submarine. Fans of K-19: The Widowmaker, your time has come.
The Wrap reports that 20th Century Fox and newly hired director Brian Kirk (Game Of Thrones) are looking to Neeson to lead their Narco Sub, which is the most fun name for an action movie we’ve had in entire years. He will find your Narco Sub!
Narco Sub has been bandied about for quite some time (at various points, directors like Tony Scott, Doug Liman, and Antoine Fuqua have considered directing it), a high-concept (literally) action outing that is bolstered by its reliance on both subs and drugs to deliver the drama. (Wait, why is this film not called Drug Sub?) Penned by David Guggenheim (Safe House), the film “follows a notorious Ecuadorian drug lord who forces a disgraced American naval officer to navigate a cocaine-packed submarine past the U.S. Coast Guard.”
Neeson would play the disgraced American naval officer, i.e. Captain Narco Sub.
Kirk is best known for his television work, and although he’s tried his hand at features before, Narco Sub would be his most high-profile project yet. (Kirk was previously set to direct early incarnations of Passengers, which has undergone significant changes on its way to the big screen.) Neeson’s plate, as ever, is quite full, and though there’s no word on when Narco Sub could start chugging along, the addition of a new director signals that Fox is likely looking to get this one into the water soon.
