Decades from now—of heck, maybe even today—film buffs will stumble across the description of the 1995 western The Quick And The Dead in some program guide and will wonder why it’s not a bigger deal. A movie about a gunfighting competition? Starring Leonard DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Sharon Stone, and Gene Hackman? Directed by Sam Raimi? How is that not one of the awesomest motion pictures ever made? Well, it’s not. Raimi really only gets to bring his Evil Dead-style flair to the gunplay scenes, and aside from Hackman, the main actors are a little stiff, and don’t give these characters with the gusto they deserve. Still, The Quick And The Dead is a fun little curio, with some bravura moments—even if works best 20 years later as a scrapbook of some major showbiz talents’ formative years. HDNet Movies will be opening up that scrapbook tonight at 8:15 p.m. Eastern, and again at 12:20 a.m.
