Fans of the late, great British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous have grown fairly accustomed to being teased by the prospect of a belated feature-film adaptation, teases often perpetrated by AbFab’s star and creator, Jennifer Saunders. Saunders has been making noises about the project since at least 2011, shortly following her successful fight against breast cancer, and around the time of AbFab’s 20th anniversary and accompanying specials. Since then, pretty much every new Saunders interview has included some minor update on the project—she has ideas for the script, she’s planning to write a script, she’s started on a script, etc.—but today comes something that looks a little like actual forward momentum on the AbFab movie.
Bolstering her previous claim that the film would be scheduled for this year, Saunders has now revealed to The Mirror that she has completed the script for the AbFab movie—or the first draft, at least. “I’m feeling euphoric,” she said. “My proper New Year’s resolution is to do the film, otherwise it’ll be a pointless year of procrastination.” While it could be argued that this project thus far constitutes several pointless years of procrastination, I will continue to give Saunders the benefit of the doubt because hot damn do I want this movie to be real—especially if it includes the star-studded (well, British-star-studded) cast Saunders claims it will. Then again, Saunders also joked to The Mirror that it would star Angelina Jolie as Edina’s best frenemy Patsy Stone (played by Joanna Lumley in the series) and an orangutan as Edina. Hell, at this point, I’ll take either.
