Rene Russo stands a decent chance of picking up her first Academy Award nomination this year for her performance in Nightcrawler, and if so, that would be long overdue—although Russo’s absence from the Oscars has been more a function of movie producers not giving her great parts than of the Academy ignoring her. One of Russo’s best performances came opposite Pierce Brosnan in John McTiernan’s stylish remake of the 1968 heist picture The Thomas Crown Affair. Russo plays an insurance investigator who intuits immediately that a jaded millionaire played by Brosnan is responsible for a high-profile art-theft, and keeps hanging around him, flirting, living the high life, and waiting for him to slip up. The movie is breezy, and lacks the panache of the original, but Brosnan and Russo are both charismatic and sexy, and it’s a treat to watch them circle each other. The Thomas Crown Affair showcases what Russo has always done well: playing shrewd women who seem like they’d be a wild, maybe even dangerous ride for any man willing to risk a romance. She and Brosnan will be dancing tonight on HDNet Movies at 9:30 p.m. Eastern, and again at 1:45 a.m.
