If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent the five days since the Avengers: Age Of Ultron trailer premiered with “I’ve Got No Strings” playing on a constant loop in your head. The inclusion of a creep-ified version of the classic Pinocchio song in the first real glimpse of one of the most—if not the most—anticipated superhero movies of the next several years is an odd touch that’s either deeply inspired or deeply corny, depending on how forgiving you’re feeling toward the creators of the trailer. Nonetheless, it was only a matter of time before the official trailer inspired the obligatory Pinocchio/Avengers mashup, and while the resulting product, by NerdReactor, is exactly what you think it is going in, the execution is pretty excellent:
When combined with the the ominous, portent-filled Ultron audio, this video serves as a timely reminder that 1940’s Pinocchio is still a deeply weird—and beautiful—film, particularly the Pleasure Island segments that this mash-up highlights so well. (Also, did real-boy Pinocchio always look that eerie? Yeesh!) I say “timely” because we’ll be digging into the Disney classic for week two of our upcoming Movie Of The Week Animation Month in November. Hopefully this video will inspire you to revisit the film in preparation for that discussion, and not give you terrible nightmares in the process.
