One of the funniest and most self-lacerating parts of this summer’s blockbuster 22 Jump Street was an extended credits sequence where stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum played host to an ouroboros of increasingly terrible sequel ideas ranging from Dance Academy to Magic School. But the finer points of the credits’ parody of sequelitis seem to be lost on Sony Pictures.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has officially green-lit 23 Jump Street and hired one of 22 Jump Street’s scribes, Rodney Rothman, to write the script. Rothman was one of 5 credited writers on the $300 million-plus box-office smash.
An offer is also out to series helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller for the director’s chair, but they have been previously known to “walk away” from third installments of absurdly lucrative franchises. Deadline also reports that they will be producing and “overseeing” the development of the script with series stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, although the promise of supervision by successful directors has turned sour before.
