Of all the movies that tried to document what life was like in the United States at the dawn of the 21st century, who would’ve thought that one of the most spot-on would be the one that stars a bunch of marionettes? Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Team America: World Police is both a satire of—and, in a way, a defense of—raging jingoism, using the beats of a dopey action blockbuster to mock post-9/11 patriotic fervor, Hollywood liberal piety, and dopey action blockbusters. The movie is also an excuse for Parker and Stone to dick around with puppets, making them swear and puke and screw. It’s an aggressively bratty film, and yet between all the scatalogical jokes (and catchy songs!) Team America serves as an enduring “state if the culture” address for 2004. It airs on Showtime at 12:30 a.m. Eastern.
