Need further proof of how much the Chinese market is driving big action movie spectacles these days? The China-set Nicolas Cage period piece Outcast will be out in China next month, but won’t hit American theaters until February next year. Not only that, but the producers of Outcast have already announced that a sequel is in the works, regardless of how well the movie does domestically. Will Outcast be any good? Let’s see what we can tell from the trailer, which shows Cage and Hayden Christensen playing British warriors who’ve ended up in China after fighting in The Crusades.

The entire trailer in one line of dialogue: “I am The White Ghost!”
The entire trailer in one screengrab:
Is there anything more comforting in this whole fallen world than the sound of Nicolas Cage speaking in a terrible accent? I have to say that I had zero interest in Outcast through the first minute of this trailer, which makes the movie look like a generic “war of the medieval worlds” picture. Then Cage shows up, all squinty and scruffy, talking like a high-school drama student in a production of My Fair Lady, and suddenly Outcast rocketed up my “want to see” list. Cage may make some bizarre choices with his career (okay, strike the “may”), but he’s one entertaining son-of-a-bitch, and a smart hire for anyone making a movie like this.
