We’re providing this space so people who have already seen a movie can discuss the issues raised by its ending. In this case, I’d love it if someone, anyone, could explain the ending to me. Or rather, answer this question: Is the ending really as half-assed as it seems? Absence sets up the possibility of extraterrestrials early on, then occasionally brings in some ominous, threatening lights, but the conclusion stubbornly refuses to take everything to the proverbial next level. The camera gets a little shakier, the lights become a little more intense, there's a little bit of levitating, and then boom, the film ends. I've been at screenings of films with irresolute final scenes (Cloverfield, The Last Exorcism, etc.) where the ending prompted audience members to shout “Oh, come on!” or profane variations thereof. This is the first time I’ve shared that impulse.
The Reveal furthers the discussion of the film while providing a space for readers who have seen it to discuss plot-sensitive details. In other words: Spoilers ahead. Avoiding spoilers? Return to the review.
