One of our ongoing features on The Dissolve is Movie Of The Week, in which the staff will spend a few days shining a spotlight on a film of our choosing. We’ll start the conversation with a lead-off essay on Monday, and continue with a staff forum on Tuesday, often with one or more additional features to follow. Sometimes our choices will be related to a movie of the moment, while at other times, we’ll just be looking at things we’ve decided are worthy of examination and discussion, for our own mysterious reasons. Whatever the case, we’re inviting you to take part in the conversation.
Movie Of The Week kicks off on Monday with Repo Man, Alex Cox’s 1984 cult favorite about the misadventures of an L.A. punk (Emilio Estevez) who stumbles into a job repossessing cars and winds up on a collision course with a scientist transporting aliens in the trunk of his 1964 Chevy Malibu. From the breakthrough punk soundtrack to the sharp commentary on consumerism to the vibrant tour of a Los Angeles rarely seen onscreen, there are a lot of interesting things to talk about. And while we’re handing out homework, here are the next few scheduled Movies Of The Week:
July 22th: Zelig
July 29th: It’s Always Fair Weather
August 5th: Brazil
