Screenwriter Max Landis chronicles his departure from the Chronicle sequel on Twitter

by Matt Singer
Screenwriter Max Landis chronicles his departure from the Chronicle sequel on Twitter

The found-footage superhero movie Chronicle was one of last year’s most surprising hits: a relatively unknown cast, a relatively unknown director, and a relatively unknown screenwriter —Max Landis, son of famed director John Landis—came together to make a little $12 million movie that went on to gross $126 million worldwide. At that point, the announcement of a sequel was one of last year’s least surprising business decisions. The first movie was smart, thrilling, and successful. Of course there would be a Chronicle 2. And it would probably be titled 2hronicle.

The question, though, is who would make it. Chronicle director Josh Trank quickly signed on for a Fantastic Four reboot, but Landis stuck around to work on the 2hronicle screenplay. Alas, yesterday the writer took to Twitter to answer a fan’s question about the status of the project in a series of disappointing tweets:

.@PaulVRea I've been off Chronicle 2 for months now. Fox had a different direction they wanted to take the series, Josh was never attached.

So yeah it's sad that as of right now I'm not involved in the sequel, and don't know what it's about even, but ultimately I can't complain.

Chronicle 2 is still probably happening, just not with my involvement as of now. It's a bummer, but there are no real hard feelings.

They hired new writers on it. I'm sure they'll announce soon. Just hope this answers the questions I've been getting everyday.

Landis also teased his first effort as a feature director, which he says goes into production on Monday.
