When Omar Tyree first published his novel Flyy Girl back in 1993, it was put out by Mars Productions, a small local press that didn’t pack the star power and punch of, say, Simon & Schuster. The book proved such a hit, however, that Simon & Schuster snapped it up and republished it under its own label just three years later. A step up? You bet, and when Tyree penned two sequels to the book, both of them went to Simon & Schuster, too, a popular trilogy that exploded from relatively modest beginnings.
Tyree’s Flyy Girl series—including Flyy Girl, Flyy Girl: For The Love Of Money, and Boss Lady—follow protagonist Tracy Ellison from her 6th birthday all the way until she reaches the pinnacle of her career. Tracy is brazen and fun and really smart, and Tyree’s books lovingly track her ascension to major stardom (Tracy becomes a huge Hollywood actress, and then uses her talents to pen a very well-regarded autobiography that she then adapts into a feature film, she sort of does it all) while also dealing with an infamously tangled love life. She’s a dynamite heroine, complex and cool, and now she’s about to make the jump to the big screen.
Wait, wait, so the books about the woman who becomes a star and then makes a movie about said life is about to become a movie? Sure! It’s meta!
Variety reports that Sanaa Lathan will star as Tracy in the big screen version of the story, penned by Precious’ Geoffrey Fletcher. Back in 2012, Felicia D. Henderson was reportedly working on adapting and directing the feature (per Shadow and Act), but that no longer appears to be the case.
The outlet also shares that the film will be based on Tyree’s trilogy, implying that we’re not due for some sort of Lathan-led franchise (there goes the wind out of my sails), but it’s a move that makes sense, considering that the first book ends when Tracy is just 17. There is so much more ground to cover with this one, and Lathan looks poised to do it.
Lathan will also executive-produce the project.
