Dude, Sam, have you learned nothing from playing the world’s greatest secret agent? You’re supposed to keep this stuff quiet.
Speaking with The Wall Street Journal about his cameo appearance as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury on this week’s episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Samuel L. Jackson let slip some probably confidential details about the cast of the upcoming Avengers sequel, Age Of Ultron. Specifically, he confirmed the rumor of one talented young actress joining the team:
“‘I don’t think we begin shooting before March of next year,’ Jackson said of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, the next film to begin shooting in the Marvel universe. ‘I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.’”
Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon confirmed the addition of Scarlet Witch (and her brother Quicksilver, who are both children of X-Men baddie Magneto, at least in the comics) to the cast of The Avengers 2 a while ago, but exactly who would play either part has remained the subject of much speculation. Elizabeth Olsen, star of Martha Marcy May Marlene and the upcoming Oldboy remake, was one name floated as a potential candidate, but there were others out there too (like, for example, Hanna’s Saoirse Ronan). Now, it seems, Olsen is a lock.
Or maybe not. Maybe I’m not giving Jackson enough credit. Maybe he’s learned well from his years as Marvel’s master spy. Maybe this is all one big disinformation campaign. Maybe Elizabeth Olsen hasn’t been cast! Maybe Scarlet Witch isn’t in Avengers 2! Maybe there is no Avengers 2 at all! WHO KNOWS HOW DEEP THIS CONSPIRACY GOES?!?
