The trailer for Jem and the Holograms is truly outraging

by Greg Cwik
The trailer for Jem and the Holograms is truly outraging

If you’re a fan of the original 1980s series, just pretend that show never existed, because the trailer for the live-action Jem And The Holograms film basically does just that. The show's creator isn’t too happy about it.

The trailer for Jon M. Chu’s film centers on Jerrica Benton (Aubrey Peeples) who accidentally becomes faaaamous after her sister secretly uploads Jerrica’s music online. Jerrica signs with a major label called Starlight Enterprises, ruled by Juliette Lewis’ manager-cum-Devil who tells Jerrica, now called Jem, that she needs to change the way she acts, sounds, looks. You know, famous-people stuff. Jerrica must choose between family and fame, and you can probably ascertain which she’ll choose come the film’s end. Somehow Molly Ringwald fits in here, which is the only highlight of this otherwise glitterless film.

The trail of the tape
Title: Jem And The Holograms
Director: Jon M. Chu
Screenwriter: Ryan Landels
Cast: Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau, Juliette Lewis
Release Date: October 23, 2015
The entire trailer in a few lines: “You’re no longer Jerrica. Jem, that’s what we call you now. That means changing the way you act, sound, and look.”
The entire trailer in one screen cap:

As our own Kate Erbland said just two days ago, "The new Jem And The Holograms movie, directed by Jon M. Chu, doesn’t sound too concerned with holograms or earrings or anything of that ilk, because it’s more worried about social media." The movie, devoid of the holographic computer from the show, comes from the studio that brought you Pitch Perfect, and Chu’s resume includes Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (which doesn’t really fit in here), so you probably know what to expect.
