Self-proclaimed “best film director in the world” Lars Von Trier continues the tantrically-paced unveiling of his upcoming hardcore sex flick Nymphomaniac with this today’s new preview clip. This time, he’s revealing part of the movie’s fourth chapter, “Delirium,” with the following video. Or, as the its labeled on YouTube, the following “appetizer.” Ew:
I love that the clip ends with the title card “A Scene From: Chapter Four—Delirium,” but it’s a scene only in the loosest definition of the word; it’s just Charlotte Gainsbourg walking toward an apartment building in one long take while Stellan Skarsgård reads an excerpt from Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall Of The House Of Usher.” No sex, no nudity, not even any vague LvT skeeziness like the last preview where Uma Thurman asks to show some children her “whoring bed.” If you’re curious, here’s how the Nymphomaniac describes this chapter:
“Delirium: Confusion. Delusion. Hallucination. The nymphomaniac’s father dies.”
I will give Lars credit for this: a big part of sexuality is the tease; the flirtation, the anticipation of the big event. And as the inordinately slow build-up to Nymphomaniac shows, he’s got that down.
