Channing Tatum is a very busy fellow these days. He spends a lot of time ensuring that his abdominal muscles remain in perfect shape, and he’s deeply invested in whipping the women (and to a lesser extent, men) of the world into a carnal frenzy over the upcoming release of Magic Mike XXL.
The feverishly anticipated film is a sequel to Tatum’s labor of love Magic Mike, rooted in his early days as a male stripper. It turns out a whole lot of people like to see attractive men with almost no clothes on gyrating hypnotically to club beats, because Magic Mike was a huge commercial hit and a critical success as well.
Tatum was the catalyst for the first Magic Mike film, but he’s even more involved with the sequel—he co-wrote in addition to starring in and producing it. But Tatum’s vision for Magic Mike extends beyond a mere sequel that’s extremely large (as evidenced by its subtitle). In his role as the official brand ambassador for all things Magic Mike, Tatum, a.k.a. The Big Brisket, told Entertainment Weekly (via Vulture) that a Magic Mike stage musical is still in the works, complete with lapdances for some lucky ladies (and men).
“We’re getting it going,” he said. “Oddly enough, the second one lends itself more to the musical. I think our original idea was to do a prequel, like how Mike got in.” The movie would actually lend itself to a musical, what with its non-stop dancing, choreography that’s suspiciously good for a sleazy strip club, and simple plot about a handsome dreamer chasing his handsome dreams alongside a similarly dreamy group of handsome dreamers.
According to Playbill the musical will also include female strippers, so there’s something for everyone. And according to the Vulture piece, a private reading is happening soon. This private reading might be the first time in the history of private readings that an actor might ask if he could take off his pants and waggle his dongle about a bit, as it would help him get into character.
