Adam West retired from the role of Batman at the age of 40. Michael Keaton was done at 41. Christian Bale bowed out at 38. Before he’s played the role even once, Ben Affleck is already 41. And you have to figure his turn as the Dark Knight in the upcoming Man Of Steel sequel is potentially the first of several appearances as Batman. If all goes well, he could be doing this for a while.
So it was sort of stating the obvious when Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara said yesterday that Affleck’s Batman, conceived with director Zack Snyder, would be “tired, and kind of weary and seasoned” in Man Of Steel 2. At his age, he can’t exactly play the young, naive, inexperienced Batman. Besides, anyone would be tired and weary after the drubbing Affleck took online last month from unhappy Bat-fans.
Speaking of that drubbing, Tsujihara also addressed the crazed fan reaction as well:
“Ben is perfect for the vision Zack has for that character. The fact that you saw such a passionate response in the blogosphere is really kind of a testament to the love that people have for this character.”
It is good to know Ben Affleck’s boss thinks Ben Affleck will be perfect in the movie he’s funding.
For the DC Comics fans out there who are increasingly perturbed over Marvel’s absolute dominance of the comic-book movie field, Tsujihara also teased more DC-related movie (and TV and games) announcements “for the coming months.” Guys, I think we’re finally going to get that Darkstars movie!
