Will Smith is famous for giant blockbusters, the insanity of his children, somewhat arrogantly dubbing the current millennium the “Willennium” to emphasize his dominance, his bromance with Tom Cruise, and his lapsed partnership with DJ Jazzy Jeff. Yes, Will Smith contains multitudes; only some of them consider the phrase, “Yo homes, smell ya later” an appropriate way to say goodbye.
But Will Smith is also an accomplished dramatic actor with multiple Academy Award nominations to his name. That’s the side of his multi-faceted personality that will be explored in Concussion, a drama where, according to Deadline Hollywood, he’ll play “Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who made the first discovery of football-related brain trauma in a pro player and fought to bring awareness to the public.” According to the summary of the film, “In his search for the truth, Omalu, a total outsider to pro football, takes on the sports industry’s status quo. His studies on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), prompted the NFL to take brain-related injuries seriously. CTE was cited in the suicides of former NFL stars Junior Seau and Dave Duerson.”
Let’s just say it’ll be really hard for Smith to come up with a light-hearted pop-rap ditty for the film’s theme song, but we have faith that if anyone can do it, it’s Smith. We’ll help him by starting off with a few lines for inspiration:
Ha ha, it’s the kid, me, Will Smith, hitting hard as a concussion
Just kidding, I’m a doctor examining brain injuries from fullbacks who be rushin’
I’m a brainy type, you know me well
Don’t know much about the NFL
Except these cheerleaders are fly as hell!
The film is set for a Christmas release date, will be written and directed by Peter Landsman of Parkland, and is based on an article from Jeanne Marie Laskas. It’ll be exciting to see Smith back in heavyweight thespian mode, and the theme song for this project should be both fun and deeply meaningful, in keeping with the film’s dour tone.
