District 9 director Neill Blomkamp may have his hands full wrapping up his latest technology-fueled outing, March’s Sharlto-Copley-finally-just-stars-as-a-robot feature Chappie, but that hasn’t stopped the filmmaker from dabbling in other pursuits—like unofficial Alien sequels that may never happen.
Over the holiday, Blomkamp took to both his Twitter and his Instagram accounts (via The Wrap) to share some concept art for what appears to be one hell of an Alien sequel, even if it wasn’t an actually sanctioned outing for the consistently extraterrestrial-inclined filmmaker. Take a peek:
Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph http://t.co/3T4iINZG18

Ps this has nothing to do with the studio. I just feel like I might do something else instead. In which case why not show some work-

Blomkamp’s imagined sequel—one that might have been called Alien: Xenomorph, per his hashtags—looks like a lovingly rendered revisit to the original world of Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi series. Although Scott himself has dipped back into the Alien well with 2012’s Prometheus (and its oft-talked-about possible sequel) and the original featured spawned three different sequels (along with a pair of vs. Predator features, which we’d all do well to forget), Blomkamp’s vision appears to stick admirably to the bones of the franchise, including a big emphasis on Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley.
Although Blomkamp’s offering doesn’t appear to be official by any means, and even he concedes it probably won’t happen, it’s a tantalizing look at what might have been.
