The first trailer for Clint Eastwood’s new war picture American Sniper, released back in October, narrowed its focus to a single scene. That original spot used a small sequence showing Bradley Cooper’s deadly gunman training his sights on a child to show how quickly tension can mount in the pressure cooker of war.
Today, a new trailer lays out swatches from the entire film, and it’s only gotten more agonizing. Eastwood isn’t the first director to depict war’s terrible corrosion on its players, and he won’t be the last. But between a deeply vulnerable performance from Cooper, Eastwood’s rigorously disciplined direction, and the Iraq War’s timeliness, this could be a formidable release to sneak in near the year’s end.
Our review drops next week, so you can tide yourself over until then with the trailer below:

Judging from the clips above, American Sniper will continue the unblinking examination of violence’s necessity and brutal consequences that Eastwood last took up with Jersey Boys. The film looks excellent, a perfect choice for rosy-cheeked families looking for a fun Christmastime outing to the movies. Enjoy the sobering appraisal of human worth, O carolers!
