As the fallout from the Sony hacking stretches, almost unbelievably, into its fourth week, the entertainment and media giant appears to be making some last-minute concessions that signal a sea change when it comes to its response to the matter. The hackers—who bill themselves as “Guardians Of Peace”—have previously made quite clear their demand that Sony’s The Interview not be released, and while Sony has so far refused to comply with said demand, the film’s stars are scaling back on their media appearances in support of the feature.
Variety reports that both Seth Rogen and James Franco have pulled out on a number of upcoming appearances, including “previously scheduled press appearances, including Rogen’s Thursday appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers and a chat with Buzzfeed Brews, leading up to The Interview’s Christmas Day release.”
The latest from the so-called “GOP” includes an announcement that they will attack theaters screening the film, promising terrorist activities that would, terrifyingly enough, echo the events of 9/11. That message reads: “The world will be full of fear…Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.) Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.”
Rogen and Franco are, however, still set to appear at a special screening of the film on Thursday, which will take place at New York City’s Sunshine Cinemas.
