Isn’t it nice when a rumor turns out to be true? Especially a good one? It’s almost, dare we say, kind of wonderful?
Just two weeks ago, we fired up our very own Speculometron to determine if a new, persistent rumor that television director Michelle MacLaren would direct DC’s first female superhero movie, the Gal Gadot-starring Wonder Woman, would end up flying. Our odds: 5 to 2. Get out your betting tickets, comic-book fans, because we’ve got a winner! You could have more than doubled your money here!
The Hollywood Reporter shares that MacLaren has indeed signed on to both develop and direct Wonder Woman. She will reportedly “work with the project’s writers, who remain unnamed at this stage, to lasso together a script for the movie.” (Of note: The film’s IMDb page currently lists screenwriters Michael Goldenberg, Matthew Jennison, and Brent Strickland as being on board to write the film, information that appears to have sprung up from two old pieces of news: Goldenberg, who wrote Green Lantern, was reportedly on board the project as late as last year, while Jennison and Strickland previously wrote a spec script.)
THR reports that “MacLaren was a top choice for the project due to her muscular work on Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, although she is perhaps most associated with her directing and executive producing work on the much-loved Breaking Bad.” Moreover, “sources say there was pressure from within to hire a woman for the job as the character has such a strong association with the notion of female empowerment,” an inside plan that hit the press weeks ago.
The outlet also shares some interesting bits of sure-to-be-future-trivia about other female directors that were considered for the gig, including The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent and Homeland co-executive producer Lesli Linka Glatter. Surely we can find them other projects that are just as cool (even if they involve far less swords and flying ability).
Wonder Woman is slated to open on June 23, 2017.
