Mere days ago, director David O. Russell made it clear: He needs more Robert De Niro. And then also probably more Jennifer Lawrence. All layered liberally over still more Bradley Cooper. Basically, the filmmaker just wants to reteam his Silver Linings Playbook all-stars for another adventure, this one focused on the wide world of mop creation. (Still no word on Jacki Weaver, however, which is a crime of the highest order.) Russell is getting his wish—well, most of it, at least as of this writing—as De Niro himself has just confirmed that he’s joined the cast of Russell’s true-life tale, Joy. But who will the actor play?
Variety reports that at a recent Rome Film Festival event, De Niro shared that he has indeed signed on for the production, saying, “Yes, I am going to do something with them. I am going to play a father.” A father? Way to be willfully obtuse, Bob.
Joy will see Lawrence playing real-life mop maven Joy Mangano, who invented the Miracle Mop and a slew of other extremely successful QVC products. While De Niro might be cagey as to the specifics of his part, we suspect the most obvious answer here is probably correct: De Niro will likely be playing her father. Russell has already commented that the film will touch upon Mangano’s family life, saying, “And the people she’s surrounded by are extremely… she has very complicated, deep, personal family relationships, which are the bane of her and the reason she is who she is.”
De Niro as a tough, wacky dad? Yeah, we can probably picture that.
