All October, Turner Classic Movies has been spending Thursday nights telling ghost stories, and tonight’s slate of spook-outs is especially strong. The night begins at 8 p.m. Eastern with recent Dissolve “Essential Viewing” designee The Innocents, followed by The Uninvited at 10, The Woman In White at midnight, and the TV soap spin-off Night Of Dark Shadows at 2 a.m. Then the evening ends in the wee hours of the morning, at 4 a.m., with Alejandro Amenábar’s superb 2001 chiller The Others. At once unsettling and emotional, The Others stars Nicole Kidman as a widowed mother of two who begins to sense the presence of strange visitors in her elegant English country house, shortly after the end of WWII. In addition to being a classic haunted house picture, complete with spine-tingling apparitions and disturbing noises, The Others is also a poetic portrait of grief, and the impulse to cling to a past that has long-since slipped away.
