Casey Affleck to produce and star in film about the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings

by Nathan Rabin
Casey Affleck to produce and star in film about the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings

Few filmmakers are as rooted in the geographic region that produced them as The Affleck Brothers Of Massachusetts. The 2007 Boston-based Dennis Lehane adaptation Gone Baby Gone was a breakthrough for both director Ben, who sorely needed a comeback following the depths of Gigli, Daredevil, and Jersey Girl, and Casey, who starred and established himself as a charismatic leading man, and not just Ben’s younger brother. Now Casey Affleck is turning his attention to another Boston story of a more recent vintage. According to Variety, the younger Affleck will both star in and produce a feature-film adaptation of the book Boston Strong by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, a non-fiction book about the search for the people behind the Boston Marathon bombing and the way the bombings affected the city.

The screenplay was written by Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy, who previously illustrated a gift for bringing true-life stories with a distinct Northeastern flavor to the big screen with their acclaimed screenplay for David O. Russell’s The Fighter. According to the article, there were plans to adapt the book as a miniseries that fell through, so now it looks the story will be hitting the big screen. It also looks like this story has the potential to be a a wicked pisser of a riveting true life tale, particularly with the Boston-friendly talent onboard.
