TheWrap reports that Universal is moving forward with Snow White And The Huntsman 2, a sequel to its 2012 reimagining of the classic fairy tale, starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as Eric Huntsman (or possibly a guy named Eric who works as a huntsman; my memory’s a little foggy on the whole thing). And they’re in early talks with Frank Darabont, he of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, and most recently the TV series The Walking Dead and Mob City, to direct it. His film would focus more on Mr. Huntsman than Ms. White, and is being viewed more as a spinoff than a sequel. If this plan moves forward, Stewart would, at most, “be limited to a cameo or a handful of brief scenes.” Darabont beat out a shortlist of other contenders, including Warrior’s Gavin O’Connor and Mama’s Andy Muschietti, to direct the project, which currently has a screenplay by Evan Spilotopoulos and Craig Mazin, and would also co-star Charlize Theron, Snow White And The Huntsman’s evil queen.
I guess you could read this news as a reaction to Kristen Stewart’s waning star power in a post-Twilight world, or to Chris Hemsworth’s growing star power, thanks to the ongoing Thor and Avengers franchises. Or you could claim it’s the work of a studio that doesn’t have a ton of franchises outside of Fast & Furious (which already faces a shaky future) and Jurassic World, desperately looking to create one. Or maybe they just want to get into the Frank Darabont business. It’s probably all of the above. But whatever the reason, one thing is certain: They need to find another title for this movie.
