A Point Break remake may sound like an exercise in futility, but it’s an exercise in futility with a director and a steadily growing cast. Ericson Core (Invincible director and The Fast And The Furious cinematographer) will direct Point Rebreak, as I’m calling it) from a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer, Equilibrium’s director and the writer of another recent exercise-in-futility remake, Total Recall.
The hook of Point Rebreak is that this time around, former-football-star-turned-cop Johnny Utah goes undercover in the world of extreme sports rather than the world of surfing. (They’re actually very different bro-dude subcultures, doncha know.) The new Break has locked up Gerard Butler to play Utah’s target (and man-crush) Bodhi, originally portrayed by Patrick Swayze. Now Deadline reports that his opponent has been cast as well: Luke Bracey will replace Keanu Reeves as the great Johnny Utah.
If the name doesn’t ring any bells, that’s because most of Bracey’s credits to date haven’t been released yet. He has a role in Max Landis’ upcoming directorial debut, Me Him Her, and one in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Best Of Me. At this point, his big claim to fame is taking over from Joseph Gordon-Levitt in G.I. Joe: Retaliation as Cobra Commander, a character he played from beneath a full-face mask that entirely hid his face. I remember watching G.I. Joe: Retaliation and thinking, “Who is that man under that mirrored faceplate, and why do I feel like he has all the spellbinding charisma of a young Keanu Reeves?” Little did I know how I right I was. Shooting on Point Rebreak is scheduled to begin this summer.
